A STEP file is a shape. An FCStd file is a model.

Most text-to-CAD tools hand you a finished solid. Changing a hole pattern or a wall thickness afterward means direct-modeling surgery on geometry you didn't build. ChaordCAD outputs the construction history itself, so you edit it the way you'd edit a part you modeled yourself.

  • A finished boundary representation faces and edges, no record of how they were built
  • Moving a hole means re-cutting the solid directly

How it works

    Describe the part

    Write what you'd tell a machinist: geometry, key dimensions, hole patterns, material if it matters. A sentence or two is enough to start.

    The model generates

    ChaordCAD builds a FreeCAD document sketches, pads, pockets feature by feature. Generation runs synchronously and takes 15–60 seconds depending on part complexity.

  3. 3

    Download and keep editing

    Get the .FCStd with full feature tree, or export .STEP and .STL. Open the FCStd in FreeCAD and continue editing the parameters directly.

Current limitations

ChaordCAD is in beta. Here's what it doesn't do well yet, stated plainly so you can decide if it's useful for what you're building.

Single parts, not assemblies
ChaordCAD generates one part per prompt. Multi-part assemblies with mates and constraints aren't supported yet.
Concept quality, not production-ready
Output is a solid starting point for iteration, not a part you should send to a machinist unreviewed. Check dimensions, tolerances, and manufacturability before you rely on it.
Prompt-to-prompt consistency is imperfect
The same prompt phrased two different ways can produce noticeably different geometry. This is a known weakness across text-to-CAD generally, not just here we haven't solved it.
Best on machined-part geometry
Brackets, plates, enclosures, mounts, and similar prismatic parts work well. Organic shapes, sheet metal with complex bends, and threaded/toleranced production geometry are weaker fits right now.

Output opens in FreeCAD

The .FCStd file ChaordCAD generates opens directly in FreeCAD, the free and open-source parametric modeler. There's no seat to buy to keep working on what you generate, and no proprietary format locking the file to this tool. FreeCAD is an independent project ChaordCAD is built to target its file format, and this isn't an endorsement by the FreeCAD team.
